Trail markers washed out in Big Bend after last month's flash flood, here's what I saw
I hiked the Outer Mountain Loop last March and the cairns were solid, easy to spot even at dusk. Went back this past weekend and I swear half of them are just GONE, swept down the washes or buried under sand. The flood from three weeks ago rerouted parts of the trail around Homer Wilson Ranch, and the official map doesn't show the new path yet. I got turned around for nearly two hours near the Dodson trail because a cairn that used to sit on a rock ledge was just missing, no trace. If you're heading out there in the next month, download a GPS track and don't rely on the old markings. Has anyone else hit a route this season where the flood damage made the trail unrecognizable from the guide descriptions?
