Took a 'shortcut' marked on an old map near the Trinity Alps and ended up bushwhacking for two hours.

The trail was completely overgrown and I had to backtrack, adding a ton of time and energy to the day. Anyone have a good source for checking if a trail is actually maintained before heading out?

Ugh, that's the worst. This happens to me all the time with old guidebooks. It feels like a bigger thing now, where information online just never gets updated or marked as outdated. I've started checking recent trip reports on AllTrails or a local hiking forum for the most current conditions. Even a park's own website can be years behind.

Honestly, @umasullivan is right, those old maps are basically just fancy art now. Tbh I just assume any 'shortcut' is a full day of fighting bushes.
