PSA: weigh your pack BEFORE the trip, not at the trailhead
Last weekend I watched a guy at the Grayson Highlands parking lot sit on the tailgate of his Tacoma and start pulling stuff out of his pack one item at a time. He had a full size camp chair, a two burner stove, and a bear can that was packed solid with canned chili. I talked to him for a few minutes and he said he had never put the thing on a scale because the website listed the pack weight as 4 pounds so he figured he was fine. He was carrying 47 pounds for a 12 mile loop. I used to do the same thing, just eyeball the pile and assume it would work out, until a buddy handed me a luggage scale at his place in Boone and my "light" setup came in at 34 pounds. Now I lay everything out, weigh it, and cut the heavy stuff before I ever leave the driveway. What is the one item you always end up cutting at the last minute?
