Overheard a thru-hiker at a Georgia diner say he ditched his tent halfway on the Appalachian Trail
He said he switched to a $40 emergency bivvy after 300 miles and claimed it saved his back, has anyone else tried skipping shelter weight that drastic?

Gotta say, I'm kinda skeptical about swapping a tent for a bivvy like that. I mean, emergency bivvies are fine for a night or two, but relying on one for hundreds of miles on the AT seems rough. Maybe it's just me, but I'd worry about condensation and just feeling trapped in there, especially in bad weather. Feels like the guy might have been exaggerating a bit, or maybe he just got lucky with his timing. I dunno, seems like a drastic move for saving a couple pounds, but different strokes.

Honestly people do wild stuff to save weight without thinking about comfort and that's just life.
