I know everyone swears by the PCT for a first big thru-hike, but my experience on the Colorado Trail last August was a total gear failure nightmare.

My 3-year-old water filter housing cracked at 12,000 feet near Twin Lakes, forcing me to boil everything for two days until I could get a replacement in Leadville.

Boiling water at 12,000 feet... that sounds like a brutal two days.

Used to think gear was gear, but that kind of failure is a real wake-up call. Derek_burns is right about how brutal that sounds, and it shows why testing old equipment matters. A simple crack can totally change your whole trip.
