Hot take: I figured out my base weight problem on the fourth day out of Tahoe
I had been adding gear after every trip for two full seasons, thinking each little thing was earning its spot. On day four of a stretch out of South Lake Tahoe last June, my hip belt dug in so bad I had to stop and actually empty the pack on a log. Turned out 6 pounds of it was stuff I had not touched since the first night, a second stove, a camp chair, and a whole extra layer. I had been packing for the fear of being cold or bored instead of packing for the route I was actually walking. Now I dump everything on the floor after each trip and leave out whatever did not get used, and it feels obvious in a way that stings a little. How do you all decide what earns a spot before the trip instead of after?
