Guidebooks are worth the weight, and I'll die on that hill
Everyone online keeps saying to ditch the paper guidebook and just run an app, but 3 years ago on the Lost Coast Trail my phone died in the salt fog near Punta Gorda, and the $12 map I'd bought at a gas station in Garberville got me through the last 18 miles. I get that paper is heavier, but batteries fail and screens crack, and a soaked page still tells you where the creek crossing is. Last month on a trip near Mount Rogers I pulled out the same beat-up guidebook and it had a note about a spring that no app listed. What's the actual plan when the tech dies halfway through a route?
