Swapped my 20 year old bench grinder for a cheap belt sander on brake jobs, night and day
I run a small shop and have been turning rotors on a bench grinder setup for way too long, mostly out of habit. Last month a customer brought in a 2011 Silverado with badly grooved rotors and I decided to try a $120 bench belt sander I picked up at a flea market in Spokane. The difference was wild. The grinder took me almost 30 minutes per rotor and left uneven spots I had to smooth out by hand. The belt sander did each one in under 8 minutes with a much cleaner finish. I still use the grinder for rough work but for brake rotors the belt sander wins. Has anyone else made the switch, or am I late to this party?
