My 2012 Tacoma's water pump let go on I-40 outside Amarillo and I fixed it in a Love's parking lot
Two Saturdays back I was hauling a load of fence panels to my brother's place in Tucumcari when the temp gauge shot up past the red and steam started rolling out from under the hood. Pulled off at exit 76, popped the hood, and sure enough the water pump bearing was shot, belt flopped loose, coolant everywhere. Twenty years back I would have called a tow and paid whatever the shop quoted, but these days I keep a spare pump, gasket, and a gallon of coolant behind the seat, so I walked into Love's, bought a cheap wrench set for $22, and got to work on the concrete. Took me about three hours in 98 degree heat with trucks rolling past, and a guy named Dale in a cattle hauler stopped to hold my flashlight when it got dark. My hands were cut up and I lost one of the little bolts down into the frame, but she fired right up and I limped the last 90 miles home. Kind of wild how much more I trust myself under a hood now than I did in my twenties. Anyone else keep a full emergency kit in the truck, or am I the only one hauling half a parts store around?
