Talking to my neighbor about his old truck made me see my own work differently

He's a retired machinist, and I was complaining about a stuck caliper bolt on a 2005 Silverado. He just said, 'You know, sometimes the problem isn't the part, it's the guy who put it on last.' He told me about a time he had to fix a whole engine because someone used the wrong thread locker. It wasn't a big speech, but it stuck with me. Made me slow down and really look at the job, not just the broken piece. How do you guys handle a repair when you suspect the last tech caused the issue?

Honestly, I've been that guy who caused the next problem. Put a water pump on once and overtightened a bolt, snapped it right off. Now I just assume the last person might have had a bad day or was in a rush. Makes me take a breath and trace everything back a step or two before I even touch my tools. Saves a ton of headache later.

Wait, someone used thread locker on an engine? That's just asking for trouble. Your neighbor is totally right though, makes you double check everything.
