Just learned Ford spec'd the same oil filter across 14 different engines and I never noticed
I was cross referencing parts on a 2016 F150 with the 5.0 and a 2019 with the 3.5 EcoBoost last Tuesday and the filter number came up identical, same thread pitch and everything. I checked the Motorcraft catalog and sure enough that one filter covers close to 14 engines going back to the early 2000s, which is why I've had the same box sitting on the shelf for a while now. Any of you keep a mental list of parts that cross over way more than they should, or is that just a me thing?
Kept a list for years and honestly it causes more trouble than it saves. Same filter housing does not mean same filter media or bypass rating, and Ford has swapped specs on the same part number more than once. The FL-820S fits a pile of engines but the interval and the oil weight are not the same across all of them, so treating them as one part gets people in trouble. Cross reference the number all you want, just do not assume the service spec follows it.
