Found out my car's 'leather' seats are mostly plastic and I've been babying them for nothing
I was reading the back of a leather conditioner bottle at the auto parts store on Saturday and noticed the fine print said not to use it on vinyl or coated fabrics, so I looked up what my car actually has. Turns out that fancy "leather appointed" wording the dealer used just means the seating surfaces have a thin layer of real hide and the rest is that same vinyl my grandma's 1985 couch was made of. I've spent almost two years wiping those seats down with conditioner like they were a baseball glove, and the panels I thought were the nice stuff are basically plastic. What got me was a forum post where a guy said only about 10 percent of the seat in most cars these days is the real deal, and mine is a base model so it might be even less. I went out and felt the back of the headrest versus the actual cushion and it's like night and day once you know what to look for. So is there a way to tell for sure without cutting a piece off, or do I just keep treating everything the same and call it good?
