TIL a Ford Model T took 12 hours to hand paint because they brushed on 20 coats of lacquer
I was reading an old shop manual reprint I picked up for $8 at a swap meet in Toledo and it laid out the whole process. Back then paint was brushed on by hand, each coat had to dry, and then a guy would rub it down with pumice before the next layer, so it took days before the car was ever ready to leave the building. Now I can spray a panel, let it flash, and clear it in one afternoon with a gun that cost less than my phone. Makes me wonder how those old timers would've felt about a modern base coat and clear setup, or if they'd still swear by brushes. Anyone here ever worked on a restoration that old and had to teach yourself the old techniques?
