Sanded through primer on a 2021 Tacoma quarter panel and now I'm torn on whether to spot fix or reshoot the whole thing
Had a 2021 Tacoma in the booth last Tuesday, customer's insurance job, and I burned through my primer in two spots on the rear quarter panel right near the body line. I caught it right as I was laying down base, so I stopped and just stared at it for like five minutes trying to decide what to do. Option one is to sand back the spots, re-prime, block it out, and hope the blend matches the rest. Option two is to scuff the whole panel and reshoot primer from scratch, which adds about 3 hours and eats into my margin on a job I already bid at $1,400. My gut says spot fix it, but I've been burned before where you can see the halo three months later in certain light. What do you guys do when this happens, do you gamble on the spot fix or just eat the time and reshoot?
That "you can see the halo three months later in certain light" line hit home for me. Had a silver Camry last year where I spot fixed a burn through on the sail panel and it looked perfect in the booth, then the guy brought it back in the spring and you could see where the texture was just a hair different. Ended up eating the whole reshoot anyway plus a free rental day for him, so that gamble cost me way more than the 3 hours would have. For 1,400 on an insurance job I'd scuff and reshoot, metal flake and certain colors will rat you out every time. Spot fixing is fine on solids but on a Tacoma with that factory metallic I would not risk my name on it.
