Found a $12 dehumidifier hack for my damp Atlanta basement

Tbh my crawlspace smelled like a wet dog for months, then I put a bucket of rock salt next to the HVAC return and it pulled out enough moisture to fill a gallon jug in 3 days, has anyone else tried this before dropping money on a real unit?
