That shot of the Andromeda Galaxy last week took my breath away

I used to just look up at the night sky with my old binoculars and call it good, but last week I finally saw a proper photo of the Andromeda Galaxy taken with a tracking mount and a DSLR. The detail on the dust lanes and the core was like seeing it for the first time. Has anyone else had that moment where a single photo made you want to upgrade your whole setup?

Is the difference really that huge compared to a regular DSLR shot? Seems like a lot of cash to drop just for some sharper dust lanes.
