My buddy the engineer made me feel dumb about star trails

I was showing him my 3 hour star trail composite from last Tuesday and he just says 'you know you could get the same shot with a 30 minute exposure and some stacking, right?' He then pulled up this forum post about dynamic range and sensor noise that totally changed how I think about long exposures. Has anyone else had a casual conversation that completely broke their workflow apart?

I switched to 15 minute subs after a cloudy night ruined my 2 hour single exposure, and the stacking actually gave me way cleaner star colors. Your buddy might have a point about the science but you still put in the time and that counts for something.
