One harsh critique changed how I do letterpress completely

Got told by a print shop owner in Portland my registration was sloppy. I thought my alignment was fine. He showed me under a loupe, and yeah, every sheet was off by a hair. I used to just eyeball the guides and hope for the best. Now I spend 20 minutes setting up each run with a micrometer. It added time but the edges are clean. Has anyone else had a pro call out something you thought you had nailed down?

The loupe is a brutal truth teller, no doubt. But honestly, that 20 minutes of setup might be overkill for some jobs. I run a lot of short runs where the paper is so thick or textured that a hair of movement is just part of the beast, and chasing that perfect register eats up the whole day for almost zero visible gain on the final piece. Sometimes you gotta pick your battles and know when good enough is actually good enough for the client, not the loupe.
