I mapped every buried fire hydrant in my neighborhood and found 9 that were completely hidden
So this is a weird one but I started doing this thing about 8 months back where I walk around with a metal detector and a notebook looking for fire hydrants that got swallowed up by bushes and dirt. Last Saturday I was on Mulberry Street near the old rail crossing and found one buried under about 4 inches of sod, the cap was barely poking through. I flagged it with a little orange marker and called the water department, and the guy who came out said they had no record of it on their maps at all. I've now logged 47 hydrants in my area and 9 of them were basically invisible, which seems like a lot for a city of 60,000. The weird part is the city sent me a thank you letter and now I'm wondering if other towns have this same problem. Does anyone else do this kind of thing or am I just the only person who thinks about hydrant access during a fire?
That is such a cool project, the sod one sounds wild and I bet the water guys were shocked. My uncle did the same thing in his town after a house fire and found like 6 hydrants totally covered by overgrown shrubs, so you're not alone at all.
