Pro tip: the Antikythera mechanism has at least 30 bronze gears and I only learned that from a museum placard in Athens last month
I always pictured it as some crude little clock thing until I stood in front of the actual fragments at the National Archaeological Museum and counted the gear teeth on the display diagram, has anyone else had a museum label totally rewrite how they pictured an artifact?

Museum labels have done that to me more than once. I spent years thinking the terracotta army was just a bunch of identical statues, then I read a placard in Xi'an explaining each face was modeled after a real soldier, and now every time I see a photo I look for the different noses and mustaches. Same thing happened with the Rosetta Stone, which I always pictured as some big impressive slab until I saw it and realized it is basically a broken rock with three versions of the same boring tax decree. There is something about standing in front of the real thing and reading the small print that makes history click in a way no documentary ever managed. Those little cards do more work than most of the exhibits.
