My neighbor argued that we should rebury most artifacts after study

He said, 'The best museum is the ground itself,' and it hit different because he's a retired geologist, not an archaeologist. Do you think preserving sites in situ is more important than displaying objects in cases?

The best museum is the ground itself" is a solid point. A pot in a case tells you one story, but leaving it where it was found shows its real context, like how far it was from a water source or a hearth. Once you dig something up, you can't put that full picture back together. Some stuff needs to be saved from looters or construction, but maybe we should document most things with 3D scans and photos, then cover them back up for the future.

But covering things back up means most people will never see them in person.
