I changed my mind about buying a cheap metal detector
I spent about $80 on a basic model from a hardware store for a dig near my town. I thought it would be fine for surface finds, but it kept beeping at every tiny piece of modern trash (like bottle caps and foil). It wasted a whole afternoon. A friend let me try her $400 detector with better settings, and it actually ignored the junk and found a real musket ball. I'm saving up for a better one now. Has anyone else made the jump from a cheap detector and had it pay off?

Yeah, that "beeping at every piece of trash" thing is exactly why I upgraded. The difference with a machine that has proper discrimination is night and day. Saving up was totally worth it for me.

Honestly @valallen, that's fair if it works for you. Kinda feel like the constant beeping keeps me from getting lazy though, makes me check the hole every time. My old machine with discrimination just let me zone out and I'd miss good stuff. Sometimes a little annoyance is a good thing.
