Appreciation post: The exposed foundation at the old Woolworth building downtown

I walked by the construction site on Main Street last Tuesday and saw the old foundation from the 1920s Woolworth store. The brickwork was way different from modern stuff, more hand laid and uneven. It got me thinking about how much history just sits under our feet in every city. Has anyone else stumbled across old building remains during a random walk?

...and the way they laid those old bricks tells you something about the people who did it. I found something similar a few years back when they tore down the old theater on 3rd Street. The foundation was this massive fieldstone thing, no mortar hardly, just stacked rocks that had been there since the 1890s. It makes you realize nobody builds stuff to last like that anymore. Now it's all concrete blocks and steel beams, efficient but sterile. There's a whole hidden history under every downtown sidewalk if you just look.
