That time a root barrier caused more mess in Austin than it fixed

Installed 40 feet of root barrier near a live oak last spring, but the neighbor's elm found its way under it anyway and shoved a patio slab 3 inches up. I told the client the barrier was a gamble, and now I'm eating the cost to dig it all out and reroute. Anyone else finding these barriers just push roots deeper instead of stopping them?

Man, that stinks. I feel for you, having to eat the cost on something you already warned the client about. I've seen the same thing happen with bamboo and even some stubborn shrubs, the roots just take the path of least resistance and go under the barrier like it's not even there. It's a hard lesson, but at least you learned it on a smaller job before something huge came along.
