After 6 years of installs, I finally stopped greasing the wrong side of the drum bearing
Honestly, I've been doing washer drum bearings since 2019 and always packed grease on the outer race first. Last Tuesday in Toledo, a senior tech watched me prep a Samsung and just said 'you're lubing the side that gets zero load'. He showed me the inner race does all the work on these front-loaders. I pulled the old unit apart and sure enough, the bearing was dry on the contact face. Now I spend an extra 4 minutes per job measuring clearance first. Has anyone else been taught this backwards by an old manual or video?

Man, that hurts. I learned the exact same way from an old tip sheet, and it took a rattle noise coming back three weeks later for me to figure it out. Now I just spin the hub by hand before I finish, if it feels rough, I know I messed up.

That hand spin trick is solid, but the real lesson here is why the hub felt smooth when you first put it in. The old tip sheet probably told you to torque it down in a star pattern, right? What nobody says is that the bearing race can seat unevenly if the hub is even slightly off center, so it feels fine until the axle warms up and shifts. That rattle three weeks later is the race finally seating itself into the groove it cut. Now I check the rotor runout with a dial indicator before I even spin the hub, that catches the hidden issues before torque does. Also, if you ever get that rough feel after a spin, pull the wheel and recheck the bearing gap, it's usually a .002 inch fix that saves a full rebuild.
