Rant: Spent 3 hours tracking down a single wrong subtitle file for an old Ghibli movie

I was rewatching Nausicaa on a stream site last weekend and the subs were just off. Not terrible, but the timing was behind by about 2 seconds. I figured I could fix it in 10 minutes by finding a better file. Turns out the version I had was a weird fan edit from 2006 that mixed two different subtitle sources. I ended up digging through four different forums and a dead torrent link before I found a clean English sub that matched the video exactly. Has anyone else wasted a whole afternoon over something this small?

Nah, that's part of the fun for me. Half the appeal is the treasure hunt.

Oh man, that 2-second lag is the worst kind of wrong. It's just far enough off that you can't ignore it but close enough that you keep thinking you can live with it. I had the same thing happen with an old VHS rip of Grave of the Fireflies once. Spent three hours matching subs to a specific encode that some guy made on a forum in 2009. Found the right one eventually but it was a pain. At least with Nausicaa you can curse at the subs while still enjoying the movie.
