Rant: A guy at the Columbus hamfest flipped my view on keeping dead formats alive
I was at the Columbus hamfest last month digging through a $5 bin of old Zip disks and MiniDiscs when a vendor named Ray told me he refuses to sell any media he cannot test on the spot. Half the crowd there thinks hoarding dead formats is pointless since nothing reads them anymore, but the other half says these discs still work fine and tossing them is just wasteful. I walked in thinking it was all junk, and walked out with 40 working floppies and a working drive for $22. Where do you all land on this, is keeping dead media running worth the hassle or are we just delaying the cleanout?
Read a thing a while back about some library that still runs a floppy drive for old records and they said the failure rate was way lower than people assume (those discs just sit there quietly working). Sounds like Ray had the right idea, test it and sell it, no guessing games. Forty floppies for $22 is a steal no matter how you slice it.
