My old iPod classic just died after 14 years of solid use

Last Tuesday it finally gave up and stopped spinning up the hard drive, so I cracked it open and swapped in a cheap SD card adapter I found online, but now the wheel is super glitchy - has anyone else dealt with this kind of issue?

The ribbon cable might be loose or the zif connector is cracked, reseat everything carefully.

Start by checking that ribbon cable again but really look at the pins inside the zif connector. I've seen those plastic tabs snap off easy if you push too hard and then the connection gets all flaky like you're describing. Did you double check that the sd adapter is fully seated in the board, like all the way down flat with no gap under it? Sometimes those cheap adapters have a bit of plastic molding that bumps up against the connector housing and keeps it from going in all the way. That alone could mess with the wheel signals since they all share the same data path through that one ribbon.
