That $600 scanner repair bill taught me a hard lesson about negatives

My Epson scanner died last month right in the middle of digitizing my dad's old slides from the 80s. I panicked and rushed it to a local repair shop in Portland, paid $600 for a new sensor board and labor. Got it back, plugged it in, and it worked for maybe 3 days before the same error popped up again. Turns out the issue was actually a loose ribbon cable inside, which the shop never checked. Has anyone else dealt with repair shops that just swap parts without actually diagnosing the real problem? I'm debating whether to just buy a used scanner instead of fighting them for a refund.
