TIL I was ruining my cast iron pans by using dish soap for years

My grandma came over last Thanksgiving and saw me scrubbing my skillet with Dawn. She just shook her head and said I was stripping the seasoning every time. I argued back saying everyone online swears it's fine now with modern soap. She pulled out her old pan from the 1970s and handed me a potato to scrub with salt and oil instead. I tried her method on my own pan and after three rounds of seasoning in the oven, the difference was insane. Food stopped sticking completely and I actually taste the bacon from months ago in my eggs now. It made me wonder how many other modern "hacks" are actually just making things worse. Has anyone else gone back to an older technique after realizing the popular advice was wrong?

Oh man, I went through the exact same thing with my grandmother's waffle iron. A little kosher salt and a cut potato will fix more pan problems than all the fancy chainmail scrubbers combined.

Doesn't the salt just scratch the seasoning off though?
