Question about that antique mall in Portland that only takes cash

Walked into Hawthorne Vintage Emporium last Saturday and realized everyone there was over 60 paying with wrinkled bills while younger folks just turned around at the door because the sign says no cards and supposedly no exceptions how does that place actually stay open without digital payments.

Respectfully, that place probably stays open because older folks are loyal customers who spend real money and don't want their transactions tracked. Cash payments save the business from paying card fees, which adds up fast on smaller sales. Ever consider that maybe the younger crowd just isn't their target audience?

Oh yeah, "target audience" - because apparently anyone under 50 just doesn't appreciate the fine art of having your coffee order tracked by a government agency or whatever. Real talk though, I get the cash thing saves on fees, but let's not pretend this place isn't also running on nostalgia points with some of those regulars who've probably been going there since before debit cards existed. The whole "loyal customers spend real money" argument would hit harder if I hadn't seen a guy pay for a $2.50 coffee with a $100 bill there and act like he was making a statement. Maybe the younger crowd isn't their target, but that's also why they're the same place that still has a "no laptops" policy written on a napkin taped to the door in 2024.
