Comparing paper maps to GPS on a hike last weekend really changed my mind

I was hiking up in the Smokies last Saturday and my phone died about 2 miles in. Pulled out an old paper map I bought at the ranger station for $3 and realized I actually enjoyed navigating with it more. The map showed me all the little side trails and streams that GPS never highlights, plus I didn't have to worry about battery life or losing signal. Has anyone else noticed they pay more attention to their surroundings with a physical map?

Damn only 3 bucks?? That's wild, I figured those things would cost like 15 bucks now lol. Crazy how a piece of paper showed you more than a fancy screen ever could.

That map was closer to 4 bucks with tax though.
