Serious question, I had to pick between a 2-wire retrofit or a full wireless upgrade for a 1980s house in Akron last week.
I went with the wireless upgrade and it saved me a full day of fishing wire through plaster, but now I'm wondering if anyone else has a good trick for dealing with signal drop in those old brick chimneys.

Saving a full day of work would change my mind too. I used to be a hard sell on wireless, but that kind of time savings is hard to argue with.

Exactly, that day you save on fishing wire turns into setup time for a mesh network. I put three nodes in my own 1920s place, one directly in line with the chimney on each floor. The brick still eats signal, but having that extra hop nearby basically brute forces the connection through. It adds maybe two hundred bucks to the job but keeps everything solid.
