Had a wired system fail during a thunderstorm in Denver last month

Was testing a new install when a surge came through the phone line and fried the main panel. That day I swapped to cellular backup on all my jobs. Anyone running into more surge issues with older wired setups?

Oh come on, how often does that actually happen?

Man that is way more common than people think. Lightning doesn't even have to hit your house directly, just a nearby strike can send a spike through the phone lines and fry everything. Had a buddy lose three panels in one storm two summers ago, all wired systems. Swapped to cellular on every job since then and haven't had a single callback for surge damage. The older wiring just acts like an antenna for that kind of energy. Definitely not worth risking a whole system install over.
