Overheard a lead mechanic say "you don't need torque wrenches if you know the feel" and it got me thinking

I was working on a CRJ-200 line swap last Thursday and this older guy next to me said it to his trainee. I use torque wrenches on everything critical but I wonder how many guys actually skip them on less important stuff. Has anyone ever had a bolt come loose or snap from going by feel alone?

A buddy of mine used to work at a shop that did a lot of fleet maintenance, and he said some of the older guys would just tighten by feel on stuff like bumper bolts and interior trim. One time a guy snapped a bolt on a wheel stud though, and the boss made everyone use torque wrenches on anything safety related after that. I guess it depends on how good your "feel" actually is for each different bolt size and material.

Yikes, that wheel stud story is rough, poor guy.
