Unpopular opinion: That old 'Tapestry of Life' webring was way better than the hype

Everyone raves about the 'Web Design Museum' site, but I always thought it was overrated and too polished. I stumbled on the Tapestry of Life webring from 1998, with its terrible clip art and broken guestbook, and it felt more real and honest than any curated archive. The raw, unfiltered mess convinced me that genuine nostalgia beats slick presentation every time. Has anyone else found a site that felt more authentic because it was a total disaster?

@the_joseph that spinning globe was actually called the Earth 3D screensaver, not a gif.

Did anyone else notice how the Tapestry of Life had that one page with the spinning globe gif that literally slowed down your browser for a solid minute? That kind of janky, honest mess is exactly what I miss. All those broken image links and the midi file that would start playing as soon as you hovered over it made it feel like someone's actual bedroom wall, not a museum display. The Web Design Museum stuff is nice and all, but it sanitizes the absolute chaos that made the old web feel like a real place where people were just figuring it out as they went.
