Tried to recreate a GeoCities layout from 1998 and my CSS totally broke

I spent an hour last night trying to get that classic gradient background and blinking text effect to work in a modern browser. Turns out the tag is dead and my table-based layout just collapsed into a mess. Anyone know a good workaround for getting those old-school animated GIFs to not lag?

Used to hate on these layouts but honestly kinda miss them now.

Noticed the same thing with a lot of stuff we used to roll our eyes at. Like those old school websites with the flashing gifs and wacky backgrounds, they feel weirdly cozy now. It is pretty funny how we circle back around on things after enough time passes. Guess there is something about the raw and unpolished vibe that feels more real compared to all the sleek minimal stuff we see today. Makes you wonder what we are hating on right now that we will probably miss in ten years.
