My dad's old Geocities site made me realize how much we lose with modern web tools

After he passed I finally cracked open his custom HTML guestbook and saw a message from a stranger in 1998 saying his recipe for peach cobbler 'saved my mom's birthday' and it hit me that back then anyone could leave a real mark online, you know? Anyone else ever dig through an old personal site and find something that made you stop?

That message from 1998 about the peach cobbler... did it make you wonder what happened to that stranger? Like, did you ever try to look up if their mom's birthday turned into a yearly tradition with that recipe? I always get stuck on the idea that someone typed that out on a slow modem, hit send, and then just went back to their regular life not knowing how much it would matter 20 years later. It makes me think about the thousands of other little moments like that scattered across old forums and guestbooks that nobody will ever find again. That kind of stuff is gone now because everything is behind logins and algorithms, you know?

Right? It's wild how those little digital time capsules are just lost forever now.
