Spent 6 hours trying to download a 3MB file on a 14.4k modem

Back in '96 I found this cool Duke Nukem 3D level on a random BBS. That 3MB file took forever so I started it before bed. Woke up 6 hours later and it had failed at 97% because my mom picked up the phone. Had to start all over again that night. Anyone else lose sleep to modem noise back then?

Ngl should've set the modem to disable call waiting first.

Right? That’s a rookie mistake for sure. Nothing like dialing in and getting that obnoxious beep beep beep mid-download because someone’s trying to call you. Had that happen once when I was grabbing a huge patch for a game, took forever to reconnect.
