My dial-up cut out right as I won an auction on eBay!
The winning bid sent, then pure silence and a busy signal.

But didn't your bid get sent before the cut-out? I'm pretty sure eBay saves your bid right when you click, so it should still count. That busy signal is just the old internet saying goodbye (in a funny way).

Oh, I really hope you're right, @the_jennifer. My luck, eBay would be the one time my click didn't register. I was going for a vintage Star Wars figure, and that busy signal felt like the internet itself was laughing at me. It's the same feeling as when your card gets declined in a quiet store. You just stand there, hoping the machine is broken, knowing full well you probably lost that auction to someone with better Wi-Fi.

Did you at least get that cool dial-up screech as a send-off? My own peak tech fail was accidentally turning off the router while uploading a huge file. I just sat there for ten minutes, staring at a frozen progress bar, completely unaware I had killed the connection myself.
