Old plant manuals show a totally different mindset on water use
I was cleaning out some old files at the plant and found a manual from the 90s. It was all about just getting the water clean enough to send out. Now, we're always looking at how to save water and energy. Back then, recycling water was seen as too expensive or not needed. I remember my boss saying, 'Why bother when we have plenty?' But with droughts and rules changing, we've had to adapt. We installed a new system that catches rain and treats it on site. It's not just about treatment anymore, it's about being smart with what we have. Makes me proud to see how far we've come.

Check your old steam traps and cooling loops first. In my experience, those are huge hidden water wasters. We found a cracked seal on a condenser line that was just letting water run to drain 24/7. Fixed it for a few hundred bucks and saved thousands. Sometimes the biggest savings come from fixing the simple, boring stuff nobody looks at anymore. Reusing non contact cooling water for things like floor wash down is another easy win.

That mindset shift was huge for us too. We started with basic metering on all outgoing lines to track usage. Found one process was using 40% more than needed. Tightened that up and cut our water bill by a quarter last year.

Used to assume our water use was set, but your results show tracking actually works.
