Why does nobody talk about the guilt you feel when family calls you selfish for running instead of visiting?

Calling someone selfish can just be an easy way to shut down a different choice. Sometimes you have to put your own needs first just to function, you know? Setting a boundary isn't the same as being unkind. It seems like people mix up self care with being uncaring. Why is looking after yourself seen as a bad thing these days?

Yeah that guilt is so real. I read this article last week about how families often use "selfish" as a control thing when you don't follow their script. The piece called it emotional blackmail, which sounds harsh, but it fits when doing something basic for yourself gets labeled as a bad thing.
