I just realized I've been mixing my shellac wrong for the past three years because I never checked the date on the flakes.
A client brought in a 1920s gramophone cabinet that wouldn't dry properly, and the old-timer at the hardware store in Brantford asked me 'how old is your cut' before I even finished explaining the problem.

I used to think it lasted forever but that old timer proved me wrong.

Yeah shellac flakes go bad way faster than people think. That old timer knew exactly what was up because fresh cut dries totally different. Always check the date and store it airtight.
