Been using the same venting technique for castings since I started. A scrap piece showed me I was wrong.

Was cleaning up a bad pour from a small gear job. The scrap had a cold shut right where I always put my vents. My boss in Toledo pointed at it and said 'Your vents are too close, they're chilling the metal before it fills.' I moved them an inch further out on the next pattern. Perfect fill. Anyone else run into this with thin wall castings?

That's a solid catch from your boss. How thin are the walls on the gear you were pouring? Wondering if the chill effect gets worse the thinner the section is, or if it's more about the total distance the metal has to travel.

Oh man, my buddy had the exact same thing happen with some small brackets.
