Found a 2005 forum thread where a guy asked if he could run a website from his basement computer.

The whole thread is people telling him it's impossible without a server farm, but then the last post from 2012 is him linking to his still-running site that got 10,000 hits that month, which makes me wonder how many other 'crazy' ideas from old tech forums actually worked out.

That 2005 thread is a funny time capsule. People back then really overestimated what you needed to run a simple site. A basic home computer with a decent connection could handle a forum or a blog for years. The real barrier was usually the internet provider shutting it down for breaking terms of service. The guy probably just had a static page or a small community, not some massive database. It's a cool story but not exactly a shocking technical feat.

Yeah, and it shows how much tech advice is just guessing.
