Ouch, that's a brutal lesson. Sewer lines are out of sight and easy to forget, but they can cause the worst damage. I've seen tree roots crack old clay pipes and cause backups that ruin floors. Always get the scope, even on newer houses, because you never know what's buried. That $300 inspection fee looks cheap compared to a five-figure dig and repair.
