So I tried using a 4-foot level on a 50-foot vinyl run in Phoenix last Tuesday

What's wrong with using a short level on a long run? A 4-foot level can still find major dips or humps in sections, which is better than just eyeballing it. Sometimes the basic tool you have is good enough to get the job started.

That's like trying to measure a football field with a ruler. A 4-foot level on a 50-foot run in that heat is gonna miss all the small waves in between. Vinyl moves a ton in Phoenix sun, so you might get the ends level but have a big belly or dip in the middle. You really need a string line or a laser for something that long. Otherwise you're just guessing for most of it.
