My professor said my designs were 'too clean' and it threw me for a loop

She told me to 'go get them dirty in the park' before I ever put pencil to paper. Now I start every project by literally dragging my fabric swatches through the grass, and the textures are way better. Anyone else get a piece of weird advice that actually worked?

Wait, did she mean that literally? That's such a strange but cool way to think about it. My old boss used to tell me my layouts were "too polite" and needed to start a fight, which made no sense at first. It sounds like you found a way to make that weird advice work for you, which is awesome.

Yeah, the "start a fight" thing finally clicked when I stopped trying to be clever and just made one thing huge and bold, right next to something tiny and quiet. It feels wrong at first, like you're being rude to the other elements. But that tension is what makes people look. Your boss was basically saying your layouts were being too nice to get noticed.
