My aha moment with pocket placement came from watching kids play

I always had trouble putting pockets in dresses without messing up the shape. Then I saw how kids' overalls have deep, angled pockets. I tried a similar design on a maxi dress. It worked great and kept the flowy look. Now I use this idea for all my pocketed clothes.

Angled pockets are a total game changer. I kept losing my tape measure from regular pants pockets until I copied the design from my nephew's cargo shorts. Putting them higher on the side seam with a slight tilt keeps everything secure without bulging.

Pockets are pretty basic sewing stuff, honestly.

Yeah, Claire's right that the concept is basic, but the execution is what trips people up. A straight vertical pocket on a fitted dress will pull and gape every time. That side seam angle Linda mentioned is key, it lets the pocket open sit naturally with your arm's movement.
