Found out last week that most denim uses over 1,800 gallons of water per pair

I was reading a report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and it said that one cotton pair of jeans takes that much water to make. Has anyone here tried using deadstock fabric to cut down on waste?

1,800 gallons per pair" is insane when you think about how much water that actually is. I've tried using deadstock denim for mending projects and it works great, just have to prewash it to avoid shrinking issues later.

Is prewashing deadstock denim enough to stop the shrink, or does it still shift after a few washes? I soaked a pair of raw selvedge once and they came out three inches shorter in the leg, totally ruined a good cuff. Love the idea of repurposing though, just got a bunch of old jeans from a thrift store to patch up some work pants.
